Soft Wash vs. Pressure Wash: Which Does Your Surface Need?

Short answer: hard surfaces that can take force get pressure washed. Anything porous, painted, or with something living on it gets soft washed.

Pressure washing removes what is sitting on top by force, and it is right for concrete, pavers and brick hardscape. Soft washing uses low pressure plus detergent to kill growth at the root, and it is right for roofs, siding, stucco, painted wood and fences.

  • Concrete driveway, sidewalk, patio: pressure wash
  • Asphalt shingle or metal roof: soft wash, always
  • Vinyl, stucco or painted siding: soft wash
  • Wood deck and fence: soft wash at low pressure
  • Brick and paver hardscape: pressure wash
  • Anything with visible green or black growth: soft wash

The Detergents Do the Work, Not the Pressure

A soft wash runs at roughly garden hose pressure, around 100 to 500 PSI, against the 3000 PSI a pressure washer will happily deliver.

The cleaning comes from a detergent blend that breaks down algae, mold and mildew at the root, sits long enough to work, and then gets rinsed away. Because the organism is killed rather than knocked off, the surface stays clean far longer than a high pressure blast that leaves the roots behind to regrow.

What We Soft Wash: Roofs, Siding, Brick, Fences

Roofs and siding are the two most common. Brick and stucco benefit because their pores hold growth that pressure alone cannot reach without driving water into the wall.

Wood fences and decks come back to their natural color without the fuzzy, torn grain that high pressure leaves behind, which matters if you plan to stain afterwards.

Excellent job. Appreciate the clear communications during the process. Thank you for bringing life back to my deck.

Before and After: Soft Washed Surfaces

No pressure marks, no torn grain, no stripped granules. Just the growth gone and the original color underneath.

Why It Costs More and Lasts Longer

Soft washing takes longer and uses product, so it costs more than an hour with a pressure wand. It also lasts substantially longer and does not damage what it cleans, which is the part that matters once you add up several years.

A blasted roof looks clean and is regrowing within a season. A soft washed one stays clear, and the granules are still where the manufacturer put them.
